Claude Code Guide: Setup, First Task and Review
Start by understanding the code, then make one reviewable change. Keep the task small enough to inspect the result and verify the behavior yourself.
What is Claude Code for?
Claude Code is an AI development tool for inspecting code, editing files and running commands. The official documentation describes terminal, IDE, desktop and web surfaces. This guide focuses on getting started from a terminal.
Its purpose differs from a general Claude conversation or organizing office work with Cowork. Keep track of the files and commands involved in the development task.
Follow official setup and confirm the project
Use the official Quickstart for your operating system and follow its authentication steps. Account requirements and limits depend on the connection you use, so check the current official instructions.
After installation, check claude --version and start it from the intended project directory. Protect existing edits and follow the project's branch or worktree policy.
claude --version
cd /path/to/your/project
git status --short
claudeAsk it to explain the code first
Inspect the files in the explanation, then request one bounded change. For a success-message improvement, preserve submission logic and ask for a check of the actual screen. Distinguish a description of the code from evidence that a change was made.
Investigate how contact form submission works in this project. Identify the files for validation, submission and the success message, with references to the code. Do not edit files yet.
Example request
Review commands and the diff before proceeding
Judge permission requests by the files, commands and external effects involved. Inspect the requested behavior, failure states and preserved logic as well as the test result.
Use the Git diff to look for unintended changes and complete the required tests and review. Continue to the SIMY Delivery Loop guide for a coordinated development workflow, or the SQM guide to check a diff against registered safeguards.
